The heat is on in Wigan!

Wigan is set for another sweltering day today as temperatures climb into the low 30s, with the borough sitting under an amber heat-health alert covering the North West. Forecasts show Wigan could reach around 33C to 34C on Thursday, making it one of the hottest days of the year so far. The alert, issued as the heatwave continues across England, warns of health risks for vulnerable people as well as disruption to travel, schools and daily routines. (Met Office⁠)

Wigan braces for another scorching day as schools adjust hours in extreme heat

The heat is already having an impact on schools across the borough. Wigan Today has reported that a number of Wigan schools are operating adapted hours or early closures because of the extreme temperatures, while local live coverage has confirmed that Shevington High School is among those closing early today. Because arrangements are changing school by school, parents and carers are being urged to check emails, texts, school apps and official school social media pages for the latest updates. If you are unsure whether your child’s school is finishing early, the safest option is to contact the school directly before travelling.
